The Gatineau Gliding Club and Rideau Valley Soaring are announcing their joint annual glider pilot Ground School. The Gatineau Gliding Club (GGC) is located at Pendleton airfield, about 50 kms east of Ottawa, and Rideau Valley Soaring Society (RVSS) is located at Kars, on the banks of the Rideau River.
This training fulfils Transport Canada Ground School requirements and prepares each student for the Transport Canada Glider Pilot License (GPL) written exam. The total length of the course of ten lectures is thirty hours, of which 15 hours of instruction are required by Transport Canada in order to obtain a Glider Pilot License, in addition to the actual flying experience required, and a GPL Flight Test. The lectures are delivered by enthusiastic and experienced licenced Glider Pilots.
Location & Time:
The Ground School starts on Monday, January 9, 2012 and runs for 10 weeks. Courses are from 18:30 to 21:30 every Monday at the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum (http://www.aviation.technomuses.ca/visit_us/how_to_get_here/ ). Parking is available free of charge. Please arrive at 6:00 p.m. on the first evening to finalise your enrolment, and to accept any course materials that you may have ordered in advance.
Places are limited and will be made available on a first come first served basis to those who register in advance.
Cost:
The fee for registration is $170, which includes a complimentary glider flight and lesson during the 2012 gliding season (typically April - October).
The recommended books are available at additional costs, as follows:
"Soar & Learn to Fly Gliders", Soaring Association of Canada $20
"From the Ground Up", Aviation Publishers $37
Registration Process:
It is preferable to pre-register for the Ground School, to assist in the planning and organisation of supplementary course books, and materials, etc. You can register by downloading the Ground School Registration Form and completing and mailing it to the Ground School coordinator along with your payment.
The coordinator can be reached at: groundschool@gatineauglidingclub.ca, and he is accessible to answer any questions regarding the Course or the sport of gliding, itself. Late registrations can be accepted at the first night of the course, at the museum.
Accessibility:
The Gatineau Gliding Club and Freedoms Wings Canada offer a program to give people with disabilities a chance to experience the freedom of soaring. If you want to learn more about this program before you register for the ground school, check the Freedoms Wings Canada site (http://www.freedomswings.ca/fw/).
