Unlike most power flying clubs, GGC is operated on the volunteer effort and commitment of present and past members of the club. The operation of the club and the services it provides to its members depends almost entirely upon the members volunteer efforts. Flight instruction (instructors donate their time to the club – there is no cost for flight instruction), flight line management, field and campground maintenance, social and special events, communications, publicity, membership and routine administration are some of the many tasks performed by the membership.
Each individual member is required to cheerfully contribute to the club by way of scheduled flight line management duties or instructional duties (as applicable). Members can expect to be scheduled for a ½ day duty period every 3-4 weeks throughout the flying season (April – October). These duty periods are scheduled on weekends as this is when most of the flying activity occurs. To assist the flight operation duty list co-ordinator (and to help with your own time management), you are strongly encouraged to respect the co-operative commitment. Many members contribute a lot more and also assist in areas such as runway, pool and clubhouse maintenance.
GGC also operates mid-week if sufficient volunteers to run the flight operations can be found. Mid-week duty periods are not assigned or scheduled.
Members are encouraged to retire to the clubhouse (full kitchen, shower and don’t forget the swimming pool) at the end of the day to socialize with other members. This after flying environment is a great time for students to pick the brains of the many instructors that volunteer their time to the club. Tent camping is free for club members and many members spend the entire weekend at the club.
